THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME...

Picture
Is famously known by its students as a very gendered university.  With its single-sex dormitories and late night parietal policy, many students recognize that relations between the two sexes can become very strained and difficult.  It is these conditions, among others, which make Notre Dame's weekend party scene very unique.  With such a high concentration of students that live on campus in dormitories, it is very easy to find multiple parties.
The Notre Dame party is a ritual activity comprised of several different types of play and games.  From the female perspective, specifically that of a Pasquerilla East Hall resident, this ritual begins early in the evening by getting a shower, putting makeup on, etc., and typically ends in the early hours of the morning with getting food, among other things, before returning to one's home.

This website explores the aspects of a typical weekend night on the Notre Dame campus, primarily from the woman's perspective.  Gender relations, drinking motivations, and social environments all contribute to what makes a Notre Dame party night so full of play and ritual.  A night of partying is saturated with Johan Huizinga's concept of play and the play spirit.  Through surveying Notre Dame students and personalized journaling by two residents of Pasquerilla East, we also see that a Notre Dame party night may follow a general set of events.  These events, however, are not set in stone and have some variance, which is understood to be acceptable.  All of these concepts together create an end and purpose for a night of partying- it ultimately creates social bonds, between the acquaintances one might meet at a party, and the friends one experiences the night with.
